How to create a gallery wall with personality

Thinking about creating a gallery wall? I love them. They add instant character, colour and depth to a space. But there are a few common mistakes I see all the time. The good news is that they are easy to fix.
Here is how I approach it:

Do not make everything the same

If you put every print in the exact same frame, you risk taking all the energy out of the wall. It can work, but only if you play with scale. Mix larger formats with smaller ones so your wall starts to move.

Personally, I love mixing materials. Warm wood next to cool metal. A bold coloured frame next to something subtle. That contrast adds character and makes the wall feel layered and alive. Your art should have space to breathe and show that you are not afraid of a little personality.

Find the right spacing

Too little space and everything feels like it is fighting for attention. Too much space and the wall loses connection. I usually aim for about three to five centimetres between frames. It feels calm, balanced and soft.

The real secret? Consistency. Choose your spacing rhythm and stick to it. Before drilling, lay everything out on the floor and play with the composition. Walk around it. Feel the flow. When it feels relaxed on the ground, it will feel right on the wall.

Create contrast and tension

A gallery wall lives from contrast. Place a bold statement piece next to something small and refined. Combine a painterly print with a graphic one. Add a photograph next to an abstract work.

And here is a little extra tip. You can even add a small object that casts a shadow. A tiny shelf, a sculptural element. It creates depth and makes the wall feel less flat.

A gallery wall should never feel like a showroom display. It should feel like you. Playful, expressive and perfectly imperfect. That is where the magic happens.
